Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre Press Release
2018 “Taiwan Festival: Breeze of Taiwan”
Taiwan Festival brings fresh Breeze of Taiwan!
Grand Opening on April 13th
Please spread the word
Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre launched a series of event under name of the 4th “Taiwan Festival”. The year’s theme is “Breeze of Taiwan”, offering a colorful showcase of artists’ in their prime through painting exhibitions, music gigs and literary forums. We cordially invite our friends in Macau to join the event to feel the heat of Taiwanese art. The grand opening this Friday (Apr. 13th) took place at Sun Yat Sen Memorial House, as “Love of Keelung: Watercolor Paintings by Wang Chieh (王傑)” lifted the curtain of “Taiwan Festival”. We were pleased to have prominent Taiwanese writers such as Egoyan Zheng (伊格言), Fumin Yang (楊富閔), Page Tsou (鄒駿昇) and award-winning Paiwan singer ABAO (阿爆) as special guests of the opening ceremony. We also invited up-and-coming Chinese classical musicians Jen Chung (任重) and Du Wan-lin (杜宛霖) to open the festival with stunning performance of xiao and yangqin, revigorated old melodies with new like, left the audience amazed!
Graced by the presence of our guests, “Taiwan Festival” was commenced. Up-and-coming Chinese classical musicians Jen Chung and Du Wan-lin played newly-composed songs for the event, interpreting a folk song, “Jasmine Flower (茉莉花)”, like never before. Based on “Jasmine Flower” and another well—loved folk song “Old Six (老六版)”, Jen Chung added a grind of pop-music cords to these classics and created “Jasmine Six Rowing a Boat” that breezed in the audience’s hearts. Another song, “Spring Wind Style (望春風風)” was adopted from a song from the 30s, “Spring Wind (望春風)”, and graciously combined elements and rhythms from jazz and country music into its original tune, giving the classic a contemporary scent. The audience was indeed overjoyed after hearing such a lively and exciting tune.
The director of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Macao, Chen Hsueh-Huai, said that there has always been educational and touristic interactions between Taiwan and Macau, to which “Taiwan Festival” has contributed greatly by introducing the charm of Taiwanese culture to Macau people. Based on the historicalness of Sun Yat Sen Memorial House, “Taiwan Festival” curated“Love of Keelung: Watercolor Paintings by Wang Chieh”to illustrate the connection between art and cultural preservation. We also invited Macao Heritage Ambassadors Association to guide the participants of the event through the story of the Memorial House. Chen expressed his sincere gratitude to Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre for the organization and planning of the event, as well as to the Macau-based organizations that participate and coordinate “Taiwan Festival”.
The director of Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre, Hu Ching-Fang, said that, celebrating the theme of “Breeze of Taiwan”, the coming Festival will be a showcase for different dimensions of Taiwanese art, highlighting on the elegance and vivacity of Taiwanese culture. She cordially invites Macau people to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan through painting, music and literary forums. A series of forums on Taiwanese will take place in two well-known Macau bookstores, Pin-to Livros & Musica and Júbilo 31 Books, featuring prominent Taiwanese writers. We hope to strengthen our cooperation with performance art groups and cultural industries in Macau through “Taiwan Festival”.
Starting from April 11th to 22th, “Taiwan Festival” will provide events such as exhibitions, concerts, forums and workshops across the weekends at Sun Yat Sen Memorial House, Livros & Musica and Júbilo 31 Books. “Love of Keelung: Watercolor Paintings by Wang Chieh” reflects the city through the eyes of the Keelung-based artist as well as his sketches on the road, which captured the images and colors of the land in his paintings. The exhibition date is now until April 22th.
ABAO (阿爆), a Paiwan singer who captured the Golden Melody Awards, will present her dynamic songs in the Paiwan language. Not only does she preserve the ancient tunes, but also liberates her musical expression through it. She will perform music that integrates ancient Paiwan ballads with rock, soul, reggae, and R&B through her powerful and memorable voice in the concert. The concert will take place on Apr. 14th (Sat.), 9 P.M., at LIVE Music Association (LMA).
The first of a series of literature forums will be held by one of the most prominent contemporary novelist, Egoyan Zheng (伊格言), who plans to explore “Imagining the World – Novel, Poetry, and AI” with Macanese poet Un Sio-san (袁紹珊). The up-and-coming novelist, Fumin Yang (楊富閔), author of “A Boy Named Flora A (花甲男孩)”, a bestseller that has been adapted into a drama series of the same title, pictured how the younger generation view their homeland with a mixed feeling in in his works.
